Profile
My pots are hand built using coils and are inspired by organic plant forms and their patterns. I am fascinated with texture, and am constantly experimenting with materials to develop different surfaces. Some pots are heavily burnished using slips to create a highly polished surface; others are scraped to leave them heavily textured using the coarse texture in the clay and. Time spent in Africa has been a strong influence on me; my work is reflective of the rawness of the continent.
It is the slow and methodical process of coil building that I enjoys, carefully adjusting each pot as it grows. In comparison to this technique, smoke firing brings an element of unpredictability, experimentation and excitement. After being initially fired in an electric kiln each pot is placed in a brick pit of sawdust and pattern is added to the form, by using different resist techniques projecting life and movement onto each unique piece of work.
